River Rats in need of help

Feb 14, 2012 06:00 am

An Athabasca tradition is in danger of fading away.

The Magnificent River Rats Festival is in poor shape mere months from its scheduled 2012 event.

The organizing committee has been working hard to once again create a fun, entertaining and affordable festival for the community, but lack of numbers is becoming an issue.

Currently there are only six volunteers working on the festival. These overworked members of the community are calling out for the help of those who enjoy the event every year.

The festival committee is hosting a meeting at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. in an attempt to get the festival moving again. It is hoped that more Athabascans will come out and get involved. For those who have enjoyed the festival in previous years, it may now be time to take an active role in making it happen.

If not enough volunteers answer the call, the possibility exists that the River Rats Festival as Athabasca has known it will become a memory.
