Peewee 'A' Hawks up on Stony Plain

Feb 14, 2012 06:00 am | By Jason Chamberlain | The Athabasca Advocate

It wasn’t pretty, but they’ll take it.

The Athabasca Peewee ‘A’ Hawks came out on top in Game One of their provincial series against Stony Plain by a score of 5-4 on Sunday in Athabasca.

That gives the local team the advantage heading into the deciding game in Stony Plain on Wednesday.

But earning that win wasn’t easy.

Hawks head coach Jody Tangedal noted that his team got off to a bit of a sluggish start in the game, but they eventually rebounded.

“In the end we did what it took to win,” he said.

The coach pointed to Trenton Tangedal and Cauy Bell as two players who delivered exceptional efforts on Sunday.

Both ended up on the scoresheet multiple times throughout the game.

The coach said that all of the kids on the team are excited to head to Stony Plain and hopefully win the series.

“Provincials is a big deal for the kids,” said Tangedal. “It’s a chance to shine.”

The Hawks also have their league playoffs to worry about.

This weekend they’ll compete in a four-team tournament in Mayerthorpe.

The Peewee Hawks know what they have to do to come out on top, according to the coach.

“We’ve got to control the play a little better, play a little more heads up,” he said.
