Athabasca College Hockey Challenge smashes ticket sales

The Athabasca College Hockey Challenge is sure to be a hit, with nearly half of tickets selling out before ticket sales officially opened to the public.

The Athabasca College Hockey Challenge is sure to be a hit, with nearly half of tickets selling out before ticket sales officially opened to the public.

Sponsors, alone, picked up about 300 tickets per game for the September tournament, taking place over two weekends at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex.

Tournament co-chair and spokesperson Jeff Johnson said tickets will be available to the public this week and hoped local Athabascans, especially kids in Minor Hockey, to take part.

“It’s going to be a fantastic opportunity for kids in our community to see not only a very high level of hockey – this is the best hockey in Canada, outside of the NHL – but more importantly, to get the sense of the opportunities that exist by combing athletics and education,” Johnson said.

“These two weekends are profiling the hockey programs of very elite hockey teams,” Johnson said. “Those two combined can open a lot of doors for a lot of kids, and kids in our community have taken advantage of that in the past and we want to see more take advantage of that education.”

The College Hockey Challenge will showcase men’s teams from the University of Alberta (U of A) Golden Bears, Augustana Vikings, and NAIT Ooks, and women’s teams from the U of A Pandas and the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

In addition to the games, the tournament’s schedule includes a coaching clinic, an education fair and a community luncheon.

“It promises to be a very significant event for our area and a very exclusive opportunity,” Johnson added. “To have this level of hockey and athletes and coaches, combined with the other events we have going on in a small community setting, is pretty rare and I don’t think there’s anything like it across Canada.”

Tickets are available online at Eventbrite or at the Multiplex. Game tickets are $10 each, or $40 for a weekend pass (including the community luncheon). Kids nine and under are free for the games.
