More than a year and $5 million later, Village of Boyle employees unofficially moved into the Boyle Municipal Centre June 9 and 10.

Staff made the relatively quick trek from the Community Centre to the new building located across from the Wild Rose Villa seniors housing complex.

The building is also the new home to the Boyle Regional Library and the Boyle Seniors drop-in centre, all with separate entrances.

With millions of dollars invested in the building, there are still hiccups to sort out, noted chief administrative officer Charlie Ashbey.

The flooring in the seniors drop-in centre has air pockets that could be due to manufacturing defects or installation, which has delayed the group from officially moving in.

Ashbey said he was told the HVAC system would allow the temperature in each room of the building to be controlled separately, but that has not been the case. Instead, the master control allows only heat or only cold air to blow at one time in different rooms, not both at the same time.

The employees have since figured out how the system works, he said, so it should not be problem anymore.

He also pointed out that new doors have been causing him headaches: permanent doors for council chamber doors were backordered, the women’s washroom door is crooked, and doorknobs were installed in the wrong place.

Other furniture, like council chairs and the library circulation desk, were also on backorder.

Ashbey noted that when the phone installation company came to hook up the phone lines, only one was put in when there should have been two, and then the company went and disconnected the library phone line after it was already hooked up.

Despite issues with the building, he said all the workers showed up on time and the municipal centre could have been open the second move-in day.

“After a week-and-a-half of no activity here, I said there would be no cheque cut until all deficiencies are resolved and all of a sudden there was a flurry of activity,” he said, adding that contractors will pop in throughout the summer to sort out the kinks.

A grand opening is planned for early fall.
