The Village of Boyle gathered Nov. 11 together to honour veterans and fallen soldiers at a Remembrance Day service in the Boyle Community Centre.

The service, hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion Boyle Branch 169, included prayers, songs and a laying of wreaths.

In addition to Legion members, RCMP, EMS, the community choir and members of the 230 Athabasca Royal Canadian Air Cadets participated in the ceremony.

Boyle Legion president Roy Kozak said the ceremony went very well and that the village always works together well for Remembrance Day.

“Boyle is a community group. We always work together,” Kozak said. “We’re community-minded people and we’ll stick together and work together.”

He added that it takes a lot of effort to put the ceremony together.

"I couldn’t even explain that. It's weeks of work,” Kozak said.

The service also featured a reading of “In Flanders Fields” by local veteran Morris Schauer and a bell ringing for fallen soldiers.

Community members and organizations were then invited to lay wreaths down at a cenotaph brought into the facility.

Boyle Mayor Colin Derko said the service was fantastic and he is glad to see the tradition continue in the village.

“Good turnout and it was very heartfelt. “I’m a big support of our legion so I’m happy they’re continuing the tradition and I’m happy people are coming out to support it,” Derko said.
