The Athabasca Midget 1 Hawks were not able to make a successful goal attempt during a home game against the league’s number one team Jan. 6, the Barrhead Steelers.

The Hawks were crushed with steel in a final 11-0 loss. Coach John Haggerty said the team started out strong then “structurally kind of fell apart.”

“As a group we failed in just about everything. Like I said, started off wrong,” he said. “What happened, I’m not sure. They were tired a bit which caused some problems, but then failing to stay in position puts everyone else out of position.”

The Hawks’ previous two games against Barrhead were only lost by one and three goal-differences, and Haggerty said he was at a loss as to what went wrong.

“We’re missing a couple players, so we have a couple players that aren’t where they were supposed to be,” he said. “Other than that I’m at a loss really. We’re going to do some talking and figure it out.”

Barrhead sits at the top of the league with 24 points, and the Hawks are second from the bottom with six points.

Haggerty said after the loss the team will be going back to the basics in practice.

“They looked like they were tired. So trying to get them in to condition… it could’ve been the Christmas turkey.”
