EPC archers finish fourth at nationals

The Edwin Parr Composite archery team had a very strong showing during the Canadian national archery tournament in Edmonton on March 10, the school finishing fourth overall out of 16 teams.

The Edwin Parr Composite archery team had a very strong showing during the Canadian national archery tournament in Edmonton on March 10, the school finishing fourth overall out of 16 teams.

A total of 24 members of the 32-member EPC team attended the annual national tournament ñ run by the National Archery in the Schools Program and the Alberta Hunter Education Instructors Association. Putting all of their practice on display in front of 1,400 fellow student competitors, it was the first competition that the team has participated in all season.

ìFor some of them this was the first time for them to be in a competition,î said Kelly Kijewski, coach of the archery team. ìFor others it might have been the second time they weíre in a competition, but it was their first time for us going nationals.î

Eighth-grader Nicholas Zaft ranked second overall out of 346 in the Middle School Boys category. Zaft was also ranked fourth out of 804 in the Overall Boys category, after shooting a score of 283.

Nicholus Roddick-Ament was ranked first in the in the 10th Grade Boys category and third out of all the High School Boys. He also was ranked fifth in Overall Boys, just behind his fellow teammate.

Apart from incredible success from the two EPC boys, Kijewski was very impressed with his entire teamís performance during the national tournament.

ìI think the kids were so pumped. I was so proud of them. I had some kids that weíre just beginners that went and shot and did very well for the first time, I was super, super proud of my kids. You get so excited when you see them doing well, and you canít help but cheer them on. It was pretty cool.î

The team will be looking to continue their successful efforts in the Thorhild regional tournament on March 24.
