After two hard-fought days, it was the Handsome Devils who reigned victorious over the Big Bear Bandits at the 5th annual Legends Bannock Cup, held in Calling Lake from April 30 to May 1.

The Devils took the lead early in the first period, and held onto it for a final score of 9-3.

However, at the end of the day, players agreed the tournament was more about having fun than winning.

“It brings the community together, and it’s all around fun for everyone,” said 19-year-old Dwayne Auger.

Auger came down from Wabasca to play for the weekend, and took home the coveted Most Valuable Player trophy.

“I didn’t take it too serious,” he said. “I just wanted the younger guys to have fun and have a good time skating.”

Four teams, with players 14 years old and up, participated in this year’s tournament, jokingly dubbed “Not your average family activity,” as families were purposefully separated onto opposing teams.

“It was to make the teams even,” said recreation co-ordinator Angie Lightning.

The tourney marked the end of the hockey season for the year, Lightning said, but that doesn’t mean the community is slowing down any time soon.

“Then summer activities start up,” she said. “It’s non-stop in Calling Lake.”
