Veteran hockey coach and Alberta Hall of Fame inductee Billy Moores will be sharing his words of wisdom on Sept. 10 at the Athabasca College Hockey Challenge coaches symposium.

Moores’ talk is open not just for hockey fans, but for anyone interested in hearing about personal development, the importance of education and the role of athletics.

“Not only do your coaches have expectations for a high level of athletic achievement, there is also the pressure to excel academically,” Moores said in a press release. “But if you have the ability meet both of these expectations, you have an opportunity to chase two dreams at once – both as a hockey player and in a career off of the ice.”

The former Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union coach of the year got his start with the University of Alberta Golden Bears alongside Clare Drake, before progressing to assistant coach with the New York Rangers and Edmonton Oilers.

He has also spent time developing young hockey players at Vimy Ridge Academy and the Donnan School in Edmonton.

“Those who have had the experience of team sports often become star employees and outstanding community members, as well,” he added.

“I’m most proud of the gratitude I feel in having worked with people of all ages, from elementary school children to professional hockey players and everyone in between. In that work, teaching and coaching, I always believed in the potential of people, and tried to help each of them reach that potential.”

The coaches symposium will feature presentations from coaches of participating teams in the Athabasca College Hockey Challenge this September. An on-ice demonstration will take place at 11 a.m. at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex, followed by Moores’ talk at 4 p.m. Admission is free.
