After serving his country, veteran Tom Mykytiuk hopes to serve his community as Aspen View Public Schools Ward 5 trustee.

“I recall leaving here as a 17-year-old kid going to university and it was pretty intimidating and overwhelming,” said Mykytiuk. “So I just want to make sure our kids are set up for success and make sure their education meets the requirements.”

Mykytiuk has two children in the school system and said his priority if elected will be advocating for support of rural students.

“I know that the current government seems to be kind of metro-centric, so I’m just trying to ensure that rural education and rural students don’t get lost in the attention paid to the urban areas because that’s where the population is.”

“I don’t really see a lot of need to change many things but certainly the whole funding formula might require some consideration,” he added.

Mykytiuk was born in the area and attended Smoky Lake School. After graduation he went to university and then joined the military, which took him around Canada and to Australia. After retiring around 2015, he came back to Smoky Lake. Mykytiuk is also of two novels.

“I can make a difference here,” he said. “I’ve served nationally, now I’ll serve my community.

Mykytiuk will run against Elohne Chizawsky. Repeated attempts to schedule an interview by the Advocate were unanswered.
