The municipal inspection report on the Town of Athabasca’s affairs is scheduled to be released Aug. 28.

Results of the long-awaited municipal inspection into the Town of Athabasca's affairs will be publicly presented Aug. 28 at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex.

During their Aug. 22 meeting, Town of Athabasca councillors voted to have the presentation earlier rather than later, as the town's nomination day for the municipal election approaches on Sept. 18.

“It sounds like it will be difficult to co-ordinate everyone; I don't want it to go until September, ” said Coun. Tim Verhaeghe. “I think August 28 - the sooner the better, and it seems to me everyone can probably make it. ”

In a letter dated Aug. 17 to council, Minister of Municipal Affairs Shaye Anderson said he had “now received and accepted the inspection report, ” and would instruct ministry staff to arrange a date for the presentation of the report.

Options for the date of the meeting were Aug. 28, Aug. 31 and Sept. 12.

Coun. Tanu Evans initially opposed proposed dates on Aug. 28 and Aug. 31 due to prior commitments, but later withdrew his objection to Verhaeghe's motion to hold the meeting Aug. 28.

“I think it's important for the public to get this information prior to nomination (day), ” Evans said. “I will support Coun. Verhaeghe's motion of the 28th (and) I will try to be in attendance. ”

Evans has already said he will not be running for council again, as well as Verhaeghe. Coun. Steve Schafer said he would wait to make a decision until the report comes out, and Gurba said she was undecided and would be deciding in the coming weeks.

The Aug. 28 public meeting will begin at 6 p.m. with an in-camera session that will last between 30 minutes to an hour, after which there is a scheduled 30-minute recess. The report will be presented publicly afterward, at approximately 7:30 p.m.
