“If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably isn’t,” is the message that Cpl. Steve Bereza wants to remind people after a few scams have hit Athabasca.

According to an RCMP press release, the Athabasca detachment have been investigating multiple scams that have been advising residents that they have won thousands of dollars or trips to the Caribbean. The scam has been asking people to email them their personal information and home addresses, so they can collect their prizes.

“They’ll get phone calls, emails and actual snail mail sent to them,” Bereza said. Bereza added that more of these scams will begin to occur as the holiday season approaches, with more people looking for gifts.

“They seem to target the elderly, too,” he said. “Myself and a lot of people I know, we don’t seem to get a lot of stuff, but yet you’ll talk to more elderly people and they get it. They’re targeting a specific set of people.”

If anyone who receives a call or email that seems suspicious should call the Athabasca RCMP at 780-675-5122.
