A century of walking didn’t stop seniors from enjoying Athabasca’s trails June 17.

Nearly 200 people – including a 101-year-old – came out for a walk, a run or a stroll during the 2017 Muskeg Creek Trail Run.

Run by the Aspen Primary Care Network, the event raises money for their health programs and to promote an active lifestyle in Athabasca.

To start off the race, a group of seniors from the Pleasant Valley Lodge walked part of the track, accompanied by Aspen PCN executive director Luke Brimmage and local MLA for Athabasca-Sturgeon-Redwater Colin Piquette.

These seniors are part of the Fitness for Life program, where physicians work with the seniors twice a week to become more active. Brimmage said that was the reason they could make it out to the run.

“There’s folks who have never left the lodge and are now up here to take part in (the event),” he said.

Ted Turkawski, 81, was there for the first time with his wife Dorothy, also 81.

“I enjoyed it, because it was not a race,” he said. “It’s nice to get out, look at the trees and plants and pool and the community.”

Also at the event, Piquette’s office served a free pancake breakfast and a clown, while a Minion entertained children.
