Time to do laundry

There was a lot in the municipal inspection report on the Town of Athabasca that piqued our interests.

There was a lot in the municipal inspection report on the Town of Athabasca that piqued our interests. But there was one line in particular that drew our attention, as it was about us:

Local media reported on council actions, with no shortage of dirty laundry to air.

This is true. Reading through our content this week, you might notice a few quotes from 2016 that were not published at that time. In our archives, we also have a few stories that were written, but spiked for lack of space.

That’s where the municipal inspection report comes in.

It is a dedicated, dense, 95-page tome all about the inner workings of the town, with administrative and council critique along with tips for the future.

This is an incredible opportunity for the next council, set to be elected Oct. 16.

The report is a guide for what to do. It provides detailed recommendations to make the town a better place for its own staff, its residents and the business community.

The report is a good tool, but it is only as good as the people using it. For it to work, it cannot be used just to put a plan in motion that never comes to fruition.

Another great quote from the report:

The Town of Athabasca had every reason to thrive and progress during the recent council term with so many critical components in place, such as council members who were deeply rooted and committed to the community, a strong financial position, committed staff, a robust regional network, and an engaged public.

The town “had” and it still has every reason to thrive.

Don’t let this report turn into the 2013 Municipal Corporate Review of the Town of Athabasca.

The Advocate will continue to pull information from the report for months, if not years to come.

Future councillors and citizens, keep the report off the shelf. Keep it on your desk. Use it to inform decisions and help clean the dirty laundry.
