A trial date has been set for an Athabasca football coach facing a single charge of sexual exploitation of a person with a disability.

Appearing on arraignment, defense counsel Paul Moreau represented 60-year-old Terrance Smith at the Court of Queen’s Bench in Edmonton Nov. 24.

Moreau asked that the trial run Dec. 10-14, 2018 in Edmonton. He also asked for an Aug. 9, 2018 pre-trial conference in chambers. Justice John Gill set the dates as requested.

Smith was a football coach in Athabasca for years, working with the Athabasca Pacers as well as the Landing Trail Intermediate School flag football team.

Smith has also worked as a volunteer firefighter with the Richmond Park fire department, but retired last spring.

On Oct. 2, following a 90-minute preliminary hearing in Athabasca Provincial Court, Judge John Maher ruled there was enough evidence for Smith to face the charge. A publication ban bars the Athabasca Advocate from identifying the victim.

The text of the charge reads that the alleged offense took place in 2016.
