Boyle Blazers Atom 4 player Brody Maloney faces off against Wainright’s goaltender during a Jan. 6 game at the Millview Recreation Complex. Maloney led Boyle’s scoring, with two of the teams three goals in a 12-3 loss.

The Wainright Bisons trampled the Boyle Blazers Atom 4 team during a home game Jan. 6 that saw Boyle defeated 12-3.

Brody Maloney came out strong with two goals against the Bisons in the second and third period, and Brayden Wellon snuck the Blazers first goal in within the game’s first two minutes.

Blazers coach Dan Maloney said he did not think the team left it all on the ice.

“Actually, I didn’t think they put enough effort. We have a few leaders on the team, number 16 (Brody) played a decent game,” he said. “Our goal tender had a little rough time today.”

He added the last time the Blazers faced off against Wainright they were able to keep the score down a bit at 9-6, but it was pretty close to the same.

Maloney said as the goal-gap widened, it makes it harder to get the kids’ spirit up.

“It’s hard to get the kids spirit up to come back,” he said.

Currently, Wainright is third in the North Eastern Hockey League with eight points, and the Blazers sit at seventh of nine teams with two points.

Maloney said the Blazers have the greatest number of girls on their team at 50 per cent, and “they step up when they can (but) they have a tougher time playing boys hockey.”

“But they do fairly well,” he said. “Basically all the leagues are (boys); there’s not too many girls. We’re the team with the most girls. They work as hard as they can.”

Maloney said in most of their games the Blazers are out shooting the other team, but are losing out in their defensive play.

He added there is a number of players in particular that stand out as leaders, and stand well in the league.

Currently, Boyle has three players within the top 11 players of the league. Maloney is in a four-way tie for first by points, but is placed fourth. Gage Brenton ranks sixth and Brayden Wellon is placed 11th.

“They will really help the team out if they can keep their ability up,” Maloney said. “The team looks forward to having those types of players. They do carry the goals.”
