The Weber team emerged from the ‘A’ event finals with a 6-4 win at the Athabasca Curling Club’s annual mixed open bonspiel Jan. 14.

Curlers from across the region gathered to crash stones at the Athabasca Curling Club’s annual mixed open bonspiel Jan. 12-14.

The event hosted at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex featured a mixture of 19 teams from Athabasca, Boyle and the Edmonton area, according to society president Paul Kunnas.

It was a good turnout, Kunnas said, adding the society was originally worried due to a decline in teams for its mixed league.

“It’s gone really well,” Kunnas said. “Our mixed league is down in attendance this year, only have six teams in the mix. So to have 19 teams show up for the bonspiel is great.”

The mixed league tends to oscillate in attendance, Kunas added, depending on how occupied various club members are.

The annual mixed bonspiel has stayed steadier with 20 teams taking part in the two years before 2018, Kunas said. He added his club does their best to keep people happy at the bonspiel.

“Curling is the main draw and everybody likes to go out there and throw some rocks,” Kunas said. “But we got a good meal, good fun on Saturday night. We feed everybody well and provide good ice for the curling and everybody likes to show up for that.”

After their 6-4 win in the final, Mike Weber from the Weber team said it was an enjoyable experience.

“It’s a great event to be at every year and we had a lot of fun,” Weber said. “Everybody’s good sports, and it’s just a good sport to be part of.”

He was complimentary of his team’s opponent in the final, the Schinkinger team, and attributed victory to some good fortune.

“The way curling goes, sometimes you get the breaks and sometimes you don’t,” Weber said.

Kunnas said the event is a fiscal loss for the society, but it remains worthwhile to put on.

“We’re here to put on good curling for our members,” Kunnas said. “This is what we’re here to do.”
