Athabasca’s Edwin Par Composite School Drama Club is getting ready for nights of comedy this week.

The club will be performing The Girls of the Garden Club at the Nancy Appleby Theatre three consecutive nights this week – Wednesday through to Friday.

“It’s a comedy set in 1980. So, it’s kind of a fun flashback for me, but it’s a whole other world for them. It’s kind of a situational comedy,” said Bruce MacDonald, the drama teacher and play’s director.

The play is about a woman who wants a greenhouse and her husband disagrees. So, she creates a plot to become president of the garden club to get the greenhouse.

The cast has quite a few females.

“I usually look at the group that I have coming up and I knew that I had a lot of Grade 12 women and I sort of look for a play for my Grade 12s, so this summer, I was reading plays and I came across this one and I thought it was hilarious,” he said.

“I think there’s 17 women and two men, though we do have two guys who are playing women in drag, so that should be fun.”

The play is very different from last year’s production of The Snow Queen, which was directed towards children.

“We didn’t want to do that again, so this one is quite a bit more mature humor. It definitely wouldn’t be for younger children. It’s a lot of quick wit dialogue rather than (how) children’s theatre tends to be really physical,” he stated.

The play starts at 7 p.m. and the doors open at 6:30.

Tickets are $15 at the door or $10 in advance and are available at Value Drug Mart.
