Athabasca County home burns down

A farm house in Athabasca County was completely destroyed by a fire June 15, according to Athabasca County regional fire-services co-ordinator Steve Hamilton.

A farm house in Athabasca County was completely destroyed by a fire June 15, according to Athabasca County regional fire-services co-ordinator Steve Hamilton.

The fire, located north of Highway 55 and west of ALPAC Road, completely destroyed the home, Hamilton said. The Grassland Fire Department responded to the call made at approximately 7:55 a.m. but the home was engulfed in flames by the time it arrived on scene.

"By the time they arrived, it was totally engulfed in flame," Hamilton said in an interview. "They had to protect some exposures, some of the grass started to burn and they didn't want that to travel. There was really no chance they were going to put it (the house fire) out."

The cause of the fire is unknown, Hamilton said, with fire departments to investigate starting June 18. He added it was too hot to start the investigation immediately after the fire occurred.

The house had only one resident, Hamilton said, who was outside when the fire occurred. The resident received very minor burns due to exposure to the heat of the fire.

"Very minor burns from being too close to the heat. Wasn't right into the flames or anything like that. When it goes up like that, flows the heat a long way," Hamilton said.

The Athabasca Fire Department was also called in to provide extra water on scene, Hamilton said.
