Athabasca Flips Gymnastics Club athletes hit the mats next to stiff competition during their first meet of the season, Gym Power meet in Edmonton Jan. 11-14.
Head coach Jenna Hamilton took five gymnasts to the meet, which she said is a “pretty big, intimidating meet” and includes gymnasts from around the province and China.
“They did really, really well for our first time competing together, considering we’re kind of a new team, with them and I,” she said.
Kadence Arychuk, Piper Dosenburg and Delaney Hefferan all competed at the Junior Olympic 3 level, and Myles Patry and Nolan Arychuk were in the Provincial 1 level.
Hamilton said Kadence was able to snatch a bronze medal on vault, with a 9.5 out of 10.
“She just executed it very beautifully, she was nice and tight, had beautiful lines,” Hamilton said. “She was very focused, and she’s a really great vaulter.”
She added team morale and spirit remained high was very positive, despite the tough competition.
“They were just cheering for each other and having fun, calming their nerves in that kind of sense,” she said.
Piper’s mother Erin Dosenburg said her daughter was a little nervous going into the meet. She added all the Flips athletes did “really” well, and Piper managed to improve her scores in all four events she competed in.
“As far as I can tell, everyone has improved so much just since September,” Dosenburg said.
Kadence Arychuk: 3rd in vault with a 9.5 score; 9th all around
Delaney Hefferan: 5th on vault with a 9.15 score; 12th all around
Piper Dosenberg: 9th on vault with a 8.9 score; 11th all around
Myles Patry: 14th in high bar with a 6 score; 40th overall
Nolan Arychuk: 14th in high bar with a 6 score; 48th all around
