The Dart Jitney tournaments continue to happen for the second year at the Athabasca Legion Hall, with the first in 2019, the Blind Draw Doubles, Jan. 19 and a second Feb. 2.

Jitney organizer Tina Whelan said the first jitney saw seven teams turn out to play.

“We had seven teams of two, with 14 players shooting darts,” Whelan said. “But we did not get too many players for the Feb. 2 event, because of the heavy snow and cold weather.”

She added when you compare turnouts to last year’s jitneys, the first event of 2019 saw the biggest turnout yet.

“It is picking up,” Whelan said. “It’s all about getting the word out, and attracting the players.”

She said they have attracted players from Edmonton during the Jan. 19 match.

“Typically, they come from the Athabasca region, as well as from Lac La Biche and Westlock,” Whelan said. Whelan said it’s their hope that they hope to begin a dart league started in the fall.

“There has been lots of interest in having a league,” she said. “If we get more players coming out, we will have more prizes available during each jitney we play.”

The next jitney is Feb. 16, with registration at 11 a.m. and play at 12 p.m.
