The team played its way to the final of the seven-team tournament but lost in straight sets, 25-21 and 28-26, versus George P. Vanier School of Donnelly.
Head coach Sheri Bencharsky said her team was able to bounce back after a slow start in the final, but was unable to complete a comeback. She added that it was not quite the result her team expected, with the school calling it a “heartbreaker ” on its Facebook page.
"It was a good, nice, tight match. We wanted to win, but it just didn't go our way, ” Bencharsky said.
Despite the finals loss, Bencharsky said it was a fun tournament overall and offered a good opportunity to go up against the other teams in the zone.
She added that her team is now focusing on improving as it prepares for the zone tournament Nov. 17-18.
“Keep improving, that's our goal, improve until zones, ” Bencharsky said. “We've had a great season. Our team has lots of Grade 12's this year so it's kind of meant to be our good season. ”
The team placed fourth in provincials last year, playing into the tournament after several years of missing it, Bencharsky said. She added that this year, they hope to climb to a medal finish at provincials.
“This is an exciting year for us, ” she said. “That's our whole goal. ”
The Edwin Parr Composite senior girls volleyball team also played in the tournament, but fell short of the finals playoff with a 2-3 record.
Coach Colleen Elgert said she tries to find positives and keep criticism constructive after results like this. She added that going into zones, she'll be focusing on the team's serving game and inspiring a “bit of fire ” into her team.
“They're all sweet and nice people and I love that about them. Sometimes on the court, they sort of found a little more energy, but there were times where they were just passive and flat, ” Elgert said.
This year is also one of growth for the team according to Elgert, who said she hopes to build up her players this season towards eventually improving tournament results in 2018.
“I look back to early September and these girls have come a long way, ” Elgert said. “My goal for this season was not to win every tournament. My goal was to see growth in players and keep them coming out. Then next year is when I'm hoping to see those scores reverse. ”
