The Village of Boyle will not yet be putting in place regulations regarding public cannabis.

The Village of Boyle Mayor Colin Derko said council agrees there is no hurry to put in regulations regarding public cannabis uses within their community.

Mayor Colin Derko said the village will abide by the rules set by the province after recreational marijuana became legal across Canada Oct. 17.

“We will not make up rules or bylaws on consumption at this time,” Derko said. “We as a council do not feel that we need to implement rules on problems that do not exist as of yet.”

He said they will enact bylaws as the problems arise.

“Bylaws are expensive to implement and enforce,” Derko said. “As such, we are saving taxpayers expenses by not implementing new cannabis bylaws at this time.”

Council did pass an amendment to its Land Use Bylaw at their Oct. 17 meeting to include cannabis retail to its list of acceptable businesses.

“It passed all three readings,” Derko said. “It is now in effect, and this means a cannabis retail outlet can open its doors within our community, provided that it complies with all provincial and federal regulations.”

To date, Derko said that nobody has applied to open a cannabis retail store in Boyle.

“We are still waiting for our first applicant,” Derko said.

Councillors Barbara Smith and Patrick Ferguson moved to pass first and second readings of the amendment, while Coun. Mike Antal made the motion to go into third reading. All three passed unanimously.

Afterward, Coun. Shelby Kiteley moved to pass third reading of the amendment, which also passed unanimously.
