Sakhon's lawyer requests sentencing date

A man who was charged with second-degree murder after the death of his cousin in Rochester is scheduled to appear in St. Albert Provincial Court on Sept. 23 for sentencing.

A man who was charged with second-degree murder after the death of his cousin in Rochester is scheduled to appear in St. Albert Provincial Court on Sept. 23 for sentencing.

In January, 25-year-old Parminder Sakhon was charged with second-degree murder as well as discharging a firearm and pointing a firearm after the death of his 19-year-old cousin Pardeep Sihu.

St. Albert Provincial Court spoke to the matter on Aug. 22, with Judge Bruce Garriock sitting. Sakhon was not present.

Duty counsel Brad Leebody stood in as agent for Pringle Chivers Sparks Teskey firm lawyer Dane Bullerwell, who was retained by Sakhon. The Advocate's calls and emails to Bullerwell went unreturned.

“So we appeared as agent for (Pringle Chivers Sparks Teskey), and they adjourned the matter for summary disposition on Sept. 23, 2016, ” Leebody said in an interview.

Leebody had asked the court to release the Nov. 21 preliminary inquiry date, and instead schedule a date for sentencing.

“That means he has not pled guilty, but his intention would be to plead guilty at that time (Sept. 23) and have argument on sentencing, ” Leebody said.

According to an RCMP press release, around 10:20 p.m. on Jan. 1, RCMP responded to gunfire five kilometres north of Rochester. When they arrived, they found the remains of an adult man.

On Jan. 3, the investigation concluded and Sakhon was charged.
