The Village of Boyle's council opted to delay a motion on a new four-way stop in the downtown core to get more information on possible parking reduction.

Village council heard a report from Boyle public works during its Jan. 11 meeting and accepted the report for information. The report highlighted installation information for a four-way stop at 1st Avenue and 3rd Street.

Boyle superintendent of public works and utilities Alex Neumann said his department could install new signs before spring.

“It's doable, which is good. That's not a problem. We can go ahead after you pass a motion, and get it done right away,” Neumann said.

Council first discussed the four-way stop at its Dec. 20 meeting and moved unanimously to have public works investigate the feasibility and logistics of the idea. The area currently has a two-way stop along 1st Avenue.

Coun. Barbara Smith said the concept is already getting positive traction in the community.

“Lots of people are talking about it already,” Smith said. “I've heard nothing but good.”

However, after staff could not confirm whether a parking stall might have to be removed to create the four-way stop due to traffic regulations, Mayor Colin Derko said he had an issue with passing a motion at the meeting.

“If we make a motion to go ahead with this and then we find out there's loss of parking spaces there, are all the councillors still in favour of changing that (intersection)?” Derko said.

Council decided to instead wait for staff to bring back information on whether a parking stall would have to be removed to accommodate the four-way stop before making a decision.

“Then we'll know whether or not to make a decision on that. There's no rush,” Derko said.

Village council unanimously voted to accept new safe operating procedures for the Boyle Arena and to continue work on new ones.

Staff presented the new operating procedures to council during the Jan. 11 council meeting. The procedures, which were all one or two pages, provide step-by-step guidelines for staff on various jobs at the arena and the safety equipment required.

Chief administrative officer Charlie Ashbey said he likes having these procedures rather than just a manual in order to help staff quickly put safety in mind when handling equipment.

“Anytime you're doing a job, it only takes a minute to look it over and just put it in your mind,” Ashbey said. “So many people never even think of what can possibly go wrong.”

Ashbey added the procedures could also prevent some surcharges on the municipality for worker's insurance.

Derko complimented village staff on the package of procedures.

“This is really good,” Derko said. “Done a lot already in a short period of time.”
