The new pool at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex is scheduled to be open to the public February 2019.

The question remains — what to do with the old Athabasca Landing Pool?

At the Town of Athabasca council meeting Dec. 4, Coun. Tannia Cherniwchan moved that council set up a committee to study the options for the old pool. The motion was carried unanimously.

Also as part of the motion, Councillors John Traynor, Rob Balay, David Pacholok and Ida Edwards were appointed to sit on the committee.

During discussions prior to the motion, Pacholok said with the pool to be vacant within three months, action is needed now.

"Maintenance said that the building is saturated with water, and that needs to be de-humidified," Pacholok said. "The building's heating system is geared towards having a pool only and that needs to change. A request for proposal is needed on what to do with the building afterward."

Edwards suggested talking to the Town of Westlock about how to deal with possible solutions.

"They recently revamped their old pool building," Edwards said. "They ended up turning it into a tractor museum in the end."

Mayor Colleen Powell said more discussion on this issue is needed.

"We need to see what any request for proposal would look like for our next council meeting in two weeks," Balay added.

Town chief administrative officer Robert Jorgensen suggested that council form the committee in order to brainstorm ideas with town administration.
