Two people are facing drug trafficking charges after RCMP found a kilo and a half of marijuana in their vehicle during their second traffic stop that day.

According to an RCMP press release, RCMP and Alberta Sheriffs Integrated Traffic Unit believed a northbound vehicle was speeding at 134 km/h on Highway 2 near Rochester just after 10:30 p.m. Feb. 11, where the posted limit is 100 km/h.

The release states that a traffic stop was conducted, and speaking to the occupants and other officers they found out that the car had been pulled over three hours before in the same area while it had been travelling southbound.“Further investigation ensued and the officer observed what appeared to be a liquor store bag in the back seat,” the release states. “However, closer examination of the bag revealed it to not be from a liquor store, but rather a garbage bag containing 6 large bags of marihuana totalling 1.5kg or 3.3lbs.”

The release continues, stating that the occupants of the vehicle were arrested for possessing drugs for the purpose of trafficking, noting that a further search of the car and theoccupants found a small amount of cocaine, a small amount of cash, four cell phones and nine packages of cannabis gummy candies.

"It is believed that this contraband was headed for the Northern community of Wabasca/Desmarais, Alberta to be used in the area's drug trade,” RCMP Cpl. Curtis Harsulla states in the release. “This seizure will have a significant affect on the drug trade in the region."
