Environment Canada calls for snow in Athabasca, Barrhead, Westlock areas

Environment Canada is warning northern Albertans to be prepared for winter weather and road conditions, as parts of the province expect up to 20 cm of snow by Thursday.

ATHABASCA — Environment Canada has warned northern Albertans to be prepared for more winter weather this week, with a forecast containing high chances of snow on Wednesday and strong winds with values below 0 degrees. 

In a March 25 tweet on the ECCC Weather Alberta page, the organization said areas between Edmonton and Fort McMurray could see as much as 20 centimetres of snow by Thursday night, March 28. 

Environment Canada’s March 25 forecast for the Athabasca-Barrhead-Westlock area notes a 30 per cent chance of flurries for Tuesday, with a southeasterly wind reaching between 20 and 40 kilometres per hour. 

Chances of flurries remains steady throughout the afternoon, and periods of snow are expected to begin in the evening with approximately 2 cm of accumulation. Overnight temperatures may reach a low of minus seven with wind chill. 

Wednesday morning will bring a 60 per cent chance of flurries, lowering to 30 per cent chance of more flurries or rain showers around noon. Wind speeds are expected to reach 20 km/h from the northeast, with a daytime high of 7 degrees above. 

The seven-day forecast for Athabasca is calling for periods of snow overnight, and cloudy skies throughout the day and night Thursday, March 28, with a daytime high of minus three, and an overnight low of minus 13.
