Locals can rub shoulders with local politicians while chowing down on a pancakes and eggs during the Athabasca District Chamber of Commerce’s annual Mayor and Reeve Breakfast, Sept. 13.

Chamber of Commerce president and breakfast co-ordinator Laurie Bonell said the event gives people a casual venue to interact with politicians and each other.

“It’s not intended to be a long drawn-out event with speeches,” she said. “Just, it’s breakfast and meet all your councillors or your mayors or your reeves. It’s like networking.”

So far Bonell said Village of Boyle Mayor Bob Clark, Athabasca County deputy reeve Warren Griffin and Athabasca County Councillors Denis Willcott and Paul Ponich have said they will attend. Bonell said she expects Town of Athabasca Mayor Roger Morrill will come as well.

Bonell said she attended the breakfast for the first time last year.

“It was packed,” she said, estimating about 100 people came out. She expects an equally large group this year.

“I was starting up in business and wanting to get back into the community again,” she said. “It’s just to meet and greet and get connected with your business community on a personal and social level … It was positive, happy, energetic. It was a good breakfast.”

“Any event that we put on is trying to get the business community together,” she added. “It’s to get people out of their stores, get them on the other side of their door.”

The breakfast will takes place Sept. 13 at the Athabasca Golf and Country Club and will be catered by the golf course’s Fox Den Restaurant.

The event will start at 7 a.m. and last until 8:30 or 9 a.m. Tickets are $25 and available from Servus Credit Union, Tracker’s Pet Supply, The Photo Shoppe and Select Equipment Rentals.
