The Warburg Wolves pounced and held the Hawks down during a female Bantam game at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex Jan. 6.

The Athabasca Hawk Claire Francis managed to squeak out one goal in the second period, but the local team was ultimately defeated 11-1 by the Rocky Mountain Female Hockey League’s third-place team.

Six of the Wolves’ pucks made their way into Hawks goaltender Brooklyn Ramey’s net during the third period.

Hawks coach Erin Francis said it “was not close” to one of the team’s better games, but she will not “lose any sleep” over the loss.

“We just weren’t forcing the play at all. We just let them control the play, the whole game,” she said. “I’m not too concerned, though. I do feel tomorrow’s going to be a better game now that we’re back in the swing of things, and (I’m) pretty confident we’ll have a better game tomorrow.”

Being the team’s first game out of the holiday season, Francis said the team’s play was “very rusty.”

She added Ramey made some “incredible saves” in net, considering she did not have a lot of help.

“We left her with some opposition in front of the net wide open a few times, but she came out big and made some good saves,” Francis said. “It’s hard to stop everything when you’re getting pummeled though.”

Shots on net against the Hawks were close to 60, whereas they only had 15 on the Wolves.

The Hawks are sitting near the bottom of the league, second-last of seven with two points.

Francis added her players have a very positive attitude.

“This group of girls, if you came in the dressing room you wouldn’t know we just lost 11-1,” she said. “They’ll bounce back and be find for tomorrow.”
