FortisAlberta is planning a three-hour power outage April 19 for customers located north of the Athabasca river in Athabasca County and the M.D. of Opportunity.

ATHABASCA – Anyone living north of the Athabasca may be without power for three hours Thursday morning when FortisAlberta makes some end-of-life repairs to its lines.

Fortis said 1,114 customers are set to be impacted by the outage, which will start at 9 a.m. and run until 12 p.m. if everything goes according to plan. The southern-most customers will be within the town’s limits, while the north-most homes impacted are on the Jean Baptiste Gambler #183 reserve north of the Hamlet of Calling Lake.

A spokesperson for the company confirmed that the maintence is pre-emptive — equipment on the line has reached the end of its operating life, and in order for technicians to safely replace parts the line needs to be de-energized.
